During the year 2016, the total Exports from Sri Lanka amounted to a total value of Rs. 1,536,167 million, while the total Imports to Sri Lanka amounted to a total value of Rs. 2,841,383 million. This resulted in a negative Bilateral Trade Balance of Rs. 1,305,216 million for Sri Lanka for the year 2016.
In comparison, during the year 2015, the total Exports from Sri Lanka amounted to a total value of Rs. 1,420,565 million, while the total Imports to Sri Lanka amounted to a total value of Rs. 2,581,365 million. This resulted in a negative Bilateral Trade Balance of Rs. 1,160,801 million for Sri Lanka for the year 2015.
Therefore there has been an increase in the Bilateral Trade deficit of Sri Lanka from the year 2015 to the year 2016.

As of 2014 Sri Lanka had a negative trade balance of $9.8B in net imports. As compared to their trade balance in 1995 when they still had a negative trade balance of $614M in net imports.
Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka (Number of visitors) have increased from 34,000 in 2015 to 45,600 in 2016, which is an increase of 22.6%. Overall there has been a sustained increase in tourist arrivals since 2010.
